Steel Roofs And The Australian Sun Don't Mix!
Steel building products are some of the strongest, most versatile materials available to the construction industry , but with the harsh environmental conditions we experience in Australia, along with the effects of corrosive airborne pollutants and the general effects of mildew and fungus, new steel roofs struggle to achieve their potential in durability and existing roofs decay all the faster.
Enter protective roof coatings. Products such as Zincalume ® and Colorbond ® steel have added a high level of durability, but in the final analysis, though sheet metal roofing may be coated with a long-life product, the problem of excessive heat build up still remains, and with many commercial premises it can be a critical issue.
In a report compiled by the University of New South Wales, the results of testing carried out by Vipac Engineers and Scientists Ltd of Victoria on Insultec heat rejecting membrane were quoted and included:
- Plain galvanised steel absorbed 29% of radiant heat
- Colorbond ® ranging from off white to red varied between 25% to 80% heat absorption
- Insultec coated steel absorbed only 15% of radiant heat
Insultec metal encapsulation system has proven to reduce internal temperatures by up to 22°C – Grovers Department Store, Blackall, Queensland; to reduce cooling cost by 77% – Department of Education and Training, NSW; cut the need for air-conditioning by half – Bureau of Meteorology, Charleville, Queensland; and to significantly reduce fuel evaporation in tanks – Ministry of Defence, Vietnam.
The secret lies in Insultec’s unique compound which re-radiates up to 95% of solar infrared rays and 85% of ultraviolet rays and almost totally blocks heat absorption. Though it seems remarkable, your steel roofing actually remains cool to the touch even under scorching skies resulting in the most minimal transfer of heat into your roof cavity.
While other forms of insulation, including batts and roof vents, have traditionally been used, it is becoming increasingly clear that Insultec heat reflecting membrane outstrips all other forms of insulation.
The compound is applied like paint, making its application non-intrusive with no down time. Owing to its exceptional flexibility and adhesion Insultec is also ideal for renovations to commercial roofing, affording the appearance and long maintenance-free life of a new roof at a fraction of the price.
